TORONTO LOVE: MARLON PALMER CONTD...

My interview with Marlon Palmer had so much content that the first post became a short story :S

So I separated the interview into two sections. This one is a little treat. Marlon shares with me the background info on some of my favourite videos:

Don't forget to purchase "Badda Badda" on iTunes (Marlon Palmer, Slynky .. produced by J Staffz)

-----

First off, the 'What Goes Around' Video, that was different. Most of your videos are comedy and skits and this one wasn't, why is that?

MP: Basically, I thought of a series, just thinking and brainstorming. I wanted to do something serious, knew it had to do with love and romance. So I was thinking how I can start it off, and leave people confused. Read the comments on YouTube, people got confused...”

Yeah, I read the comments. People were like, “I don't get it” and “What's going to happen next?”

MP: It was perfect, they wanted more, and begged me to make episode two. I have 5 episodes, it will be a total episodes of 5. It was exactly what you were going for.

What about “Sh*t Toronto People Say”, was that following the trend that was going on on YouTube?

MP: Yeah, definitely. I noticed there was not Toronto one.
But when I planned to release it, some people in Toronto seemed to [have] planned to do it that same week.
Then Drake retweeted it and it blew up from there....

Yeah, he tweeted about it...Said something...

MP: He said something like, “I'm dying doggie LOL”... From there it was Sh*t Jamaican People Say.
There was another one out that someone did, but it was bad, So I had to represent. So I called Slynky. People wanted part 2 really bad, and I agreed. Sh*t Jamaican People Say Part 2... I did it because it [Part 1] didn't even cover all the material. And there are still more to do...

Ok, what about Jamaican Death Bed and who is the girl in that video? She was so funny...!

MP: I literally was watching this show and someone was in the deathbed. The family were saying their goodbyes. I was high [laughs] and I developed an idea for it. Someone else came up with the idea of the will though, at first I was just gonna roast them before I die.
The girl is my friend Savannah, I've known her for a long time.

I think she was perfect for the role [laughs]

MP: Yeah, she's going to be in more videos.

I saw some older videos too, and “Look Your Worst Challenge”? Where did that come from?

MP: That was literally how we start making videos. After that one, people were like “Hey, you guys should do more” and all that. There are these two girls that do a make-up tutorial on YouTube and people love it--- Angie's Choice?--- and we did our own video, used our friends' make up. We didn't know what mascara was and the video, it was all natural and improvised because we didn't know how to put on make up or anything about it.

I can hear some girl's voices in the video, was that your friends it looked like they was handing you make up.

MP: Yeah, it was their make up [laughs]

Moving on from that one, there is the “Wray and Nephew Challenge”? That was so nasty [laughs] how was that? Everyone has to take a shot without making a face?

MP: Yeah, we got tons of responses off of YouTube with that, people were going in.

Isn't it like 60% or something...

MP: Yeah [laughs]

Any success stories?

MP: Yeah, some people were able to do it. It's not too too bad, nothing like the Cinnamon Challenge.

What's the Cinnamon Challenge?

MP: You've never heard of the Cinnamon Challenge?!

No... [laughs]

MP: You have to take a spoonful of cinnamon and try to eat it, it's impossible, it soaks up any-- like put cinnamon in water, it will kill it... So when you eat [a spoonful of] cinnamon all you see it POOF! People coughing it out.

Oh cuz you're inhaling and it's all...

MP: Yeah, it's crazy.

Marlon pulled up some videos on YouTube on the Cinnamon Challege and the Wray and Nephew Challenge and told me about the ones he thought were good, right in the middle of the interview, so that I get an idea of what he's talking about. A stand up guy.

TORONTO LOVE: MARLON PALMER

"...My mind--- the way it works--- I'm analyzing in the back of my mind
of how it can become a video"

If you have access to YouTube, you know about the rising star, Marlon Palmer. He's kind of a big deal.

So far, he has shown you what a man looks like in a wig purchased at Keele and Sheppard, how to lick your hoodie after the awful taste of Wray & Nephew and how NOT to put on mascara-- all guaranteed to make you laugh.
More importantly, Marlon has shown you how to identify your resources, utilize your talents and share it with the world--- all while having a few laughs. Toronto couldn't be more proud.
Palmer is not just a 23 year old from Toronto trying to make it. To the youths of Toronto and nation wide, including his close friends, he is an inspiration.

Who is this guy?

I found Palmer in his apartment addictively consumed by the drama filled “Breaking Bad”. With his Nintendo 64 by the TV and his Macbook and Black Berry close by, Palmer was planning for the upcoming Windsor Sports Weekend. Palmer and close (and absolutely hilarious) friend, Slynky hosted the event alongside Legacy Sound. You can see his promo video here.

Growing up mostly in the GTA area, Palmer is “dead middle” of about ten siblings and from Jamaican decent. He was inspired by Will Smith, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx, just to name a few. He admires Will Smith for his versatility. What is evident here is that Palmer is versatile as well. He has developed a couple of characters such as “Marleesha” (my favourite) and “Donovan McGarland”. Palmer stated that he knew they were REAL characters when people referred to them as Marleesha and Donovan, not as “Marlon playing Marleesha” or “Marlon as Donovan”. When a character is referred to as an actually individual instead of an extension of the actor, it is a real character--- did you know that? I didn't, but it make so much sense.

His YouTube productions are inclusive of his close friends who actually all contribute in different ways whether through editing, recording, construction of ideas etc., showing not only support for his aspirations, but a drive for their goals as a group. His friends don't all necessarily have to have experience in being a part of sixteen plays as Palmer has, nor do they have to be graduates of Juliard. Palmer insists that it is based on their natural talents, “They won't necessarily have to be acting, like Slynky---that's natural--- it's natural for him, he's just like that all the time”. Palmer shared that the skits are actually NOT scripted (insert surprised face here), as I initially assumed. The videos are actually improvised, which really shows the extension of his talents and the talents of his castmates.

"Friends With Benefits"

Furthermore, Palmer shares how he develops an idea, and how to combine the natural talents of the cast with a little motivation and a big step away from the biased point of view,“Lately, something will happen or someone will say something, and my mind--- the way it works--- I'm analyzing in the back of my mind of how it can become a video. Then I write it down quickly. Later on I think of ideas for it".

His Resume

In addition to his experiences as a performer in the past, Palmer has developed a talent for making people laugh with his creativity and vigilance of the workings of Toronto and its people.

In 2009, Palmer tried out for the Much Music VJ Search, a reality television contest held by Much Music with a number of selected candidates to compete for the title of the next Much Music VJ. Intially, Palmer's friend, Laith Hakeem, auditioned and encouraged him to as well, “Laith auditioned first, he convinced me to do it. I auditioned and they gave us a call”. Hakeem and Palmer made it to the final four, however, Liz Trinnear won the competition.

It was during my research of Palmer's audition for the VJ Search that I learned he did an educational video on women and violence. Considering the interests of the blog being social justice and equality, I asked the story behind this. He had done the video,"Zero Tolerance" as a part of a challege during the VJ search, “During the VJ search, in 2009, did the video. There was a challenge where we had to speak out on a topic of our choice. Pick an organization representing the topic of our choice. I picked a Women's Awareness group [Canadian Women's Foundation] and picked Violence Against Women as my topic, raising money and awareness for the cause”.

Women-- Canadian Women's Foundation (2009)

In 2012, Marlon Palmer auditioned for Karmaloop TV and came in second place.

What's next for Marlon Palmer?:

You can find Palmer brainstorming for his next moves. On a daily, Palmer thinks of ideas for his next skit, and distributing an the remainder of his anticipated series, “What Goes Around”.
And my favourite news, Palmer has decided to extend the character of Marleesha to have her own skits. I'm looking forward to this...

Aside from acting, Palmer plans to continue in marketing and promotions, “I want to do creative advertising and marketing. I think I'm pretty creative. I enjoy seeing what I can come up with, I always like a challenge”.

Palmer has future plans on spreading the word on the power of social media, along his productions of comedic YouTube videos, “I'm going to be talking to a class next month about social media and how it influences society... Especially with KONY 2012, this is a prime example of how powerful social media is. People think that it is because of the videos that I am popular, but there is a formula”. He has a string of new videos to upload, most recently “Marlon's Intro” featuring Toronto artist Ron Dias, as a promotion for Dias' upcoming self-titled EP releasing on April 24th of this year. Dias developed the idea for the video and showed Marlon the “rap mode” as an appreciation and as a response to Palmer's inspiring words for Dias to craft his music.

See? Told you he's an inspiration.

Twenty Twelve

*Sigh* another year...

Whether you partied in the downtown streets, a friend's house or at an over the top hotel banquet room, I very much hope you enjoyed yourself. I know of a couple that partied in Australia... Jealous.

Downtown Toronto was BA...NANAS last night. The TTC provided free transit from 12am-4am to lure people away from drinking and driving. This is one of the pros of the TTC, in a sea of many cons.
Parts of Queen street and Yonge street were blocked off, especially Queen street due to the mass crowd at Nathan Phillips Square.

I'm probably just getting old, but New Year's parties aren't as appealing to me. I am very content with staying home with take out, wine and watching a movie with close friends than getting glammed up to party. Clubs, lounges, bars... are all great but on certain occasions, not the Thursday to Sunday partying I used to do in my early 20s. Aside from making it to the bar before last call, try some other activities with friends, explore the city and discover.

We've all spent hundreds on Christmas gifts, so here are some non-Clubbing and low cost events in Toronto for Winter 2012:

Toronto Hot Spots

You could call this post a restaurant review by yours truly. I'm not a food critic but I wouldn't feel right about keeping these hot spots a secret... they're too good.

I recently stopped by Pizza Libretto on Ossington as I heard some great things about this place. It was a Sunday and they open at 4pm... We arrived at 3:55pm and they was already a line up slowly forming. Throughout our meal and I'm sure up until closing time, the line up was still there--for both dine-in and take out. They also have a location on Danforth (check the location and hours of operation on their website)

Pizza Libretto makes VPN (Verace Pizza Napoletana Association) certified pizza as organized by the European and Italian government. The restaurant provides a welcoming environment... high chairs along the entire bar, tables, booths and half-booths plus a visible kitchen where you can clearly spot the wooden oven. The place fills up fast with high turnovers before, during and after the traditional mealtimes.

During my visit, I was able to try the buttermilk calamari, cremini mushroom pizza and espresso-cinnamon gelato. The calamari was amazing-- perfectly cooked on a bed of red pepper almond sauce. On the pizza, the mushrooms weren't overcooked like you get at your local franchise, it was done just right, with the compliments of perfect dough. Those who know me know I love ice cream... the gelato was served with a hearty biscotti, with enough of the proportion for two to share.

If you've ever spend your weekends or an occasional evening during the work week at the Dundas Square/Eaton Center area, make sure to drop by Joey's Eaton Center just West of the mall's H&M entrance off of Dundas. The open patio looks very welcoming (aside from the Winter season of course). Side note: The washrooms are a little far off, but you'll find humour on each sign leading you the way.

Joey's Eaton Center- 1 Dundas West, Toronto

The restaurant is in the busy area of Yonge and Dundas but at the same time, situated away from the commotion with just enough space to enjoy meals and drinks with friends and family.
I was super hungry the day I went... hence, this meal:

Joey's Restaurants have several locations throughout Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Ontario and Washington. You can find the menus by location on their site... There are so many things I need to try from the Eaton Center location's menu ... Steak and Sushi, Miso Ramen, Bombay Chicken.... *drool*

Lastly, a great spot to check out for a relaxing and cozy environment is Polish style based Czehoski's on Queen Street. Like many of the greatest restaurants, lounges and bars in Toronto, from the outside it doesn't look like much. But inside, there are two levels. The upper level is more intimate, with cozy booths and a fire place while the downstairs area is just as relaxing. I was there this past Halloween weekend and tried the Blue Crab Cakes and Perogies.

The thing I love love love about this place is that it is used as an art gallery to support local artists (in rotation every two months). If you like art and you like food... this is the place to be.

I guess this post can link to my previous post "One of A Kind" question... Why do you love Toronto?
For me, one of the many reasons are places like these that serve up amazing food. If you know me, you know I can't say no to food.
In the words of my best friend, "The way to my heart is through my belly".

TdotOdot: One of a Kind

Yonge/Dundas - 11.12.11

Many people swear that the city they grew up in "is the best city in the world" and if they find themselves travelling to a city they love, but not as much as their hometown, it is labelled their "second home".

When I conduct interviews for my blog, one of the questions I always ask is, "What do you love about Toronto?".

When I ask this, I don't expect the interviewee to list the top 5 things they love about this city. I don't even expect them to give me a solid answer, because what I love about Toronto can't be put into a few sentences. It is, at times, indescribable, and can only be explained through experience that can't always be translated into text. What I love about Toronto are things that may exist in other cities, but that's okay. The uniqueness that Toronto consists of cannot always be seen by the eye, but experienced without realization.

I can list landmarks or historical events that occurred in Toronto that make it so great. I can list the interconnectedness of various races from interpersonal to institutional level of social interactions that make Toronto so amazing. I can tell you about moments when I was out in the city and was grateful of every part of what Toronto was... I can go on and on but that can't really convince a reader.
The way to know is to experience it, and with an open mind too.

For those that live in Toronto, whether you pronounce the last "t" in TORONTO or not... next time someone asks you what you love about this city, what will you say?

Beats, Love and Happiness

Beats, Love and Happiness -- 2nd Annual Canadian Beatboxing Championship was held at the Mod Club (722 College Street, Toronto) this past Saturday. This was my first experience watching a Beatboxing performance, and I can't lie, I was impressed.

Sixteen contestants from all over Canada competed for the title judged by 5 judges: Organik, Elaquent, Human Record, Eddy Da Original One and X-Wam.
Last year's winner -- KRNFX (Terry Im) won again, and is now the two-time Canadian Beatbox Champion. He was also the winner of the title in South Korea in 2007 and 2009 and was a finalist in the 2009 World Championship. Notable mentions are Young, Beatbox RJ, Mighty Mouse and Scott Jackson (who reminded his opponent where he was standing... "THIS IS TORONTO"). The final battle was between Scott Jackson and KRNFX.

Toronto Artist: DIAZ

In between the battles, Diaz (Toronto artist) performed some of his tracks. As an aspiring hip hop artist he is also a battle MC and has opened for such artists as Kim Davis, Slim (112), Joell Ortiz and Classified. He is also the 2011 winner of the "Best Hip Hop" award (Barrie New Music Festival). Watch out for him in the near future as he gets ready to drop his next studio album.

I came across a great piece of work by Ryan Emond, a photographer and visual artist from Toronto from my great friends at HeartBeatsTO, who greatly shares my appreciation for the city. Emond gave the go ahead to post this video on the blog. The music in the video is by Clams Casino called "I'm God".

Take a look:

Toronto Love: My Heart Beats T.O. ... Does Yours?

“We know we grew up privileged and we have access to resources... We want to set this out now because we know there will be other young adults in the next generation who also want to do this”.

My Saturday was quite exciting. I won $20 on Lotto Max plus a free ticket (Come on $50 million.. It has my name on it!) and spent most of the day with one of my best friends. I got to enjoy a cold but sunny day and it ended with an interview with 2 of Toronto's most laid back and determined people I have yet to meet.

Samia and Madiha Mirza are two sisters out of five siblings that are out to conquer Toronto by setting out their brand “Heart Beats T.O.”. They promote Toronto culture and want to show you what this city is all about.

Growing up in the Bloor and Dufferin area, the two sisters found Toronto to be culturally welcoming. “We're Pakistani and were raised in Toronto... I don't think that [culturally] you could feel singled out in this city”.
I don't think words ever sounded more true. In a city of 2.48 Million people and 5.5 Million in the Greater Toronto Area, how could you?
Conversations about culture were traded back and forth between myself and the two sisters. I found them to be well aware of Toronto's population and they seem dead on about how to get a movement started. Their brand and their idea were inspired by a TV show they were watching called “How To Make It In America” on HBO that had Samia and Madiha question themselves, “Why are we just sitting here?”.
Initially, they wanted to leave the logo just on the tag of their shirts and make it a clothing brand. A friend suggested that they should put the logo actually be on a t-shirt.
And they did... They began by creating T-shirts with a simple (yet, my favourite) logo of a heart rate monitor (think electrocardiogram) with an outline of the CN Tower. Their slogan?: "My Heart Beats T.O. ... Does Yours?" ... Good question. The two sisters wore the shirts themselves and received numerous comments and questions... “Hey, where did you get that shirt?”

Sisters Samia (left) and Madiha (right)
Founders of Heart Beats T.O.

Samia went to York University for Management and Public Relations and Madiha went to Seneca College for Graphic Design. The pair used what they knew and created something that I thought was going to revolutionize Toronto's culture and basically spread the word. That is exactly what the sisters said,
“We don't have a goal in sentence form exactly, but we know that if and when people from Toronto end up moving, there is something about this city and still holds them here. That is where we got 'My Heart Beats TO'. We know that so many people still have Toronto Pride, even if they live elsewhere”.

When I asked what their future plans were, they bombarded the question with so many ideas that I even began to make suggestions as if I was a part of the crew. They have more accessories and clothing with the logo on it to be made, they hope to attend events and market their brand and in the near future they hope to be affiliated with charity organizations (Thumbs up from me!). Once they become more established, they hope to give back to the city by sponsoring children's sports teams and focus on organizations of literacy and art, “We know we grew up privileged and we have access to resources... We want to set this out now because we know there will be other young adults in the next generation who also want to do this”.
Toronto is a great place to start this as it is usually the centre of attention with the MuchMusic Awards, Caribana, TIFF, Juno Awards and Toronto's Raptors and Leafs drawing in tourists outside of Canada into the 416/905 and now 647 and 209 area codes. Samia added, “We want the image of Toronto to be alllll LOVE” while Madiha loves the diversity and even the weather out here, “I know its cold, but I love that we get a break from each weather!”

This baby has some swag huh...? :)

Heart Beats TO began in the Summer of 2010 but will relaunch with full force in this Summer. They have copyrighted their brand and already have planned summer events to be involved in. They hope to be apart of the PanAm Games sometime in the future as well. In the really really really long run, they're going global (“Pinky... we're gonna take over the world!”) and might even have “My Heart Beats” as a brand and distributing to each city all over the world.
It's a representation and pride thing. These two sisters were proof to me that there are people out here other than my own group of friends who are truly proud to be a part of Toronto.

If you ever wondered what Toronto was like, you'll learn from these two sisters.
My heart beats T.O. ... Does yours?

Thanks to Samia and Madiha for

T.O. shirt!! :)
