Stop the Shut Down: Hamilton CAS Takes a Stand

With so many social service members being laid off, the ultimate price is paid by the children that depend on social services. Hamilton Children's Aid Society has endured many cut backs and are feeling the pull from insufficient provincial funding.

Below is a message from their Facebook group:

Hamilton Children's Aid Society 5 Day Service Shutdown Places Children at Risk!

After a crippling laying off of 70 staff members in May of this year, the Ontario Liberals have told the Hamilton Children's Aid Society that they must additionally cut another three million dollars over the next three years. The 70 layoffs have primarily eliminated preventative and support services that keep families together. This means more children in foster care, insufficient resources, and more children being placed at ri
sk!

Starting October 11, 2013 the Hamilton Children's Aid Society will shut down for 5 DAYS in an effort to meet it's obligation to deliver a balanced budget this year due to the insufficient provincial funding! But what further cuts will come over the next three years....

Please join us in sending a clear message to the provincial government by arriving at 8:30 am (sharp) on October 11, 2013 for a 1.5 hour rally in front of the Hamilton Children's Aid Society.

Stand up and speak out in defense of the children whose voices are not being heard!

Bring your friends, family, children (it's a P.A. day), and everyone you know!

We also encourage you to bring pots and pans to help us break the silence.

Hamilton Children's Aid Society was established in 1894 and is now one of the 53 CAS in Ontario. Despite its long standing in Hamilton, it is facing government cut backs, forcing children into insufficient care.

For those of you that don't work in community or social services, you may not realize that when there are budget cuts, social services and community services always get the shit end of the stick. I refuse to believe that the province "doesn't have money" for community and social services. It is clear that with research, we could find that a disproportionate amount of money is distributed. The fact that the social and community service sector is last on the list regardless of the immediate attention required for this area, is disturbing.

Children do not ask for inadequate parenting, abuse and neglect. The government commits to help them, yet, they cut funding and services.

No take backsies.
