More Sexual Assaults at York U

There have been three reported York U sexual assaults last week. In July of 2011, I wrote about sexual assaults on and around York University and the implications of the campus and the area's security system... or lack thereof, that makes it quite easy for perpetrators to sexually assault women in that area, whether they are residents, students or just passing by.

All three incidences occurred near or at Vari Hall, situated at Ian Macdonald Blvd. and York. This creates numerous questions about why and how security had not been increased due to York U's reputation as the amount of sexual assaults seem to be prevalent on and around campus. As reported in July 2011, York U has increased the security budget but the plan executed is far from adequate to keep people safe.

It's easy to say, "Take down those damn flat screen tv's on campus and spend that on security" or "Revise the security system and crack down on assaults on campus"than to actually transform them into action. I'm sure there are more political and institutional issues involved. However, if the campus believes that this matter is handled adequately, they are stunningly misinformed. In addition, these incidences around and on campus is nothing new, so it is difficult for one to be convinced that the matter is in the process of being handled, if at all.

It's sad to say that I'm hesitant to even apply to York U for a possible Graduate Program in attempt to try and remove myself from an institution that will not provide the proper security for my own well being. It says a lot about what value the campus puts on security of the students, but also that they seem to take violence against women very lightly, considering the previous events occurred, and yet, no immediate and adequate actions taken.

For the safety of students and residents near by, what has to happen so that York U will make adequate changes?

As of Monday evening, Police has arrested and charged Oshane Leach, 20, for the three sexual assaults.
York's Deputy Vice Provost Janet Morrison claims to have increased foot and car patrol after the incident. She issued a statement saying that, "This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the University"

Newsflash Morrison, it's BEEN tolerated. And really, it still is.
Increased foot and car patrol is for the now. A plan is required for the future. Some students are calling for permanent Police presence, however, it is questionable as to why this wasn't put it place years ago.
